An RP featuring L-young's Echo and Wildfire-Tama's Samwell

Echo

Small clouds of dust rose up like swirls of smoke with every footfall as the young female padded through the tall dry grass of the surrounding grassland. Ears pricked forward as she watched a young doe and her weanling fawn graze along the far edge of the field. She wasn’t interested in hunting. She was exploring outside the bounds of Aryn territory and hunting was not permitted but there was something serene for the young wolf in watching this mother and child pair. It was a rare moment of quiet meditation for Echo and it reminded her of the ache she still felt, tender memories of Mother surfacing in her mind. Her ears dropped back as she watched. Would she ever be able to fill the hole left by Mother’s death?

Settling on her haunches, Echo took a deep breath of the dry air as she glanced up towards the sky. There was a static tension in the atmosphere that made her fur stand slightly on end. There was a storm building. It would bring some much-needed rain to the dry land as the fall season took over, turning the hills into a wonderful array of colors before they fell to the ground. The change in the trees fascinated Echo. This was her first time seeing fall colors and she kept losing herself in their beauty. It was a good distraction from the emotions she tried to keep locked away.

Samwell

Samwell plodded through the territory. There were mountains to his side, but he stayed in the forest lowlands. That is where he may be able to find prey. He was constantly looking for prey, since he was constantly hungry since he had become a loner. But he was slowly getting better at hunting… usually he just caught rabbits or perhaps a beaver or groundhog. But he was slowly working his way up to deer. Or at least he hoped. He let out a tired sigh, looking up at the sky and noting the dark clouds rolling in toward the mountains. They were dark and heavy with rain. Strong wind buffeted the gold and red trees, foretelling the coming storm. Samwell didn’t like this weather… especially not when he didn’t have a place to stay dry… He kept moving, keeping an eye out for any kind of den that he could use. Thunder rumbling through the landscape was enough to get Sam trotting forward more quickly, his ears and head low. He needed to find somewhere to shelter…

Thunder clapped around him and Sam nearly jumped out of his skin. He sped up into a canter, but broke through a patch of undergrowth to find himself right next to a little brown she-wolf sitting and enjoying the day. He skidded to a halt on the dry leaves, barely avoiding her. ”Oh! ... excuse me! I didn’t… see you.” Sam said, backing up and feeling hot under his fur. Despite having been a loner for a little while, he still found that he was lacking in many basic skills, such as moving carefully and being able to scent other wolves nearby.

Unknown to the two wolves, the clap of thunder had come from lightning that had lit a try shrub aflame. The fire ate angrily at the dry, dying foliage, heading steadily toward them.

Echo

The wind began to pick up and Echo’s short fur whipped around her as the sky continued to darken to an angry blackish blue. There was an unexpected bright flash of white nearby that made her flinch slightly and she had to blink spots from her eyes. She pinned her ears back to keep the dust out and reveled in the way the thunder shook through her body with a jolt that got her heart pumping with adrenaline. She didn’t hear the other wolf racing towards her until he crashed through the bushes to her side and she jumped to her feet, eyes widening in surprise as he narrowly avoiding bowling her over.

Surprise faded almost instantly as the poor fellow almost stumbled over himself apologizing. He looked half panicked for some reason so Echo smiled pleasantly to try and ease his nerves. Maybe he would be her friend! “Oh, don’t worry about it. My name is Echo, what’s yours? Is everything all right? You look like you were running from something. Are you being chased?” Raising her eyes, Echo looked behind the stranger to see what he might have been running from. She saw a curious black cloud rising up from the ground in the distance but nothing that looked like an immediate threat.

Cocking her head slightly as she rambled off questions for her new companion, Echo pricked her ears up as the wind changed direction, bringing a peculiar scent to her. Breaking off, she wrinkled her nose as she sniffed the air. She had never smelled this scent before. It had a sharp smell to it and her instincts immediately started to battle with her curiosity, one warning caution while the other peaked a desire to go explore. The young female glanced curiously at her companion. “Do you know what that smell is?”

Samwell

Sam immediately relaxed as he saw how pleasant this she-wolf was. He wagged his tail tentatively with a small smile as she introduced herself. He felt himself grow hot under his fur as she asked if he was alright, and if he is being chased. Just the thunder… but he wasn’t going to admit that! ”I’m Samwell, but you can just call me Sam.” the loner explained, ”It’s nice to meet you, Echo. And yeah, everything’s fine. Just hurrying to find somewhere to shelter before it starts to rain,” he said as casually as he could.

Sam frowned as she asked if he knew what that smell was. He breathed it in and grimaced at the heavy tang of it. ”No…” he said, never having seen or smelled fire in his entire life. ”I think… we should probably head in the other direction, though…” He said anxiously as another gust of wind blew the heavy smoky air even closer. The world was growing hazy around them and Sam felt a faint sting in his eyes. He felt fear well within him. ”Uh, yeah, we had better get going.” He said more forcefully to Echo, who seemed pretty curious about the smell. Sam wasn’t curious. He could care less what it was, as long as it didn’t get to him!

Echo

Standing with her gaze fixed on the weird cloud, the young female only half heard Sam’s increasingly urgent pleas to flee. The wind brought the growing cloud directly towards them and the hazy air made Echo’s throat burn and her eyes began to water as the temperature of the air grew hotter. Coughing a bit, Echo saw movement at the edge of her vision as the doe and her fawn suddenly darted off. Squirrels were leaping through the branches of the trees as quickly as they could and a glance towards the sky revealed birds fleeing in all directions to escape the cloud.

Pinning her ears back as the bright orange tails of this unknown beast became visible along the tops of the tall grass, Echo’s instincts began to overrule her curiosity and she took a step back. Sudden rapid movement through the grass made her tense and a rabbit half-crazed with panic dove right between the two wolves in it’s effort to escape the unknown monster creeping ever closer. The air was getting so hazy that it was getting hard to see and breathing was becoming an effort. It was enough to convince Echo that Sam was right. They needed to get going. Turning away, Echo looked at Sam. “You’re right. Let’s go!” She leapt away from the cloud into the tall grass, having no idea where she was going in the hazy wind.

Samwell

Samwell watched as the animals began to flee and finally it appeared that Echo agreed with his fears. His eyes widened as he saw some strange, flickering force, bright and glowing, consuming the forest before them. The air grew heavier and heavier and they finally turned to go. It was difficult to see where they were going as the air got smokier and more painful to peer through. It was getting hot and Sam instinctively felt the urge to get to water. He kept pace beside her, sticking close to the small she-wolf’s brown form so not to lose her. ”Do you know where any rivers are?” He asked, his voice alarmingly hoarse and scratchy already, which heightened his fear further.

Echo

Her throat burned with each ragged breath as Echo fought for air in the suffocating haze. There was nothing but shadows visible through the swirling black and red cloud. Her nose burned and the only scent she could pick up was the sharp odor of the burning world around them as they ran through unknown terrain. The sounds of creaking wood and branches crashing down came to her through the roar of the burning air. All sense of direction was gone for Echo and she was completely disoriented as the senses she relied upon so much became useless. She would have begun to panic had she not felt Sam's fur brush hers as he kept close while they ran. It triggered her protective instincts to get her new friend out of this place safely.

Sam’s question was just barely audible as she ran blindly with her ears pinned to her head. A river?Echo tried to swallow as the image of water made her realize how parched she was. She ended up coughing instead as she had no moisture left in her mouth. Her body was instantly desperate for a drink. ”No, I don’t. I’m not from this area.” She managed to cough out. Where would a river be? She thought desperately as her eyes searched blindly through the black haze.

The lack of good air was quickly taking a toll on the young wolf’s small body. Her limbs were beginning to feel heavy and her mind was growing fuzzy as she racked her brain for where a river might be, causing her to trip slightly as she ran. Her eyes flowed with tears in the heat, her nose was burned and cracked, and she couldn’t hear any rushing water through the roar of this monster that pursued them. Her only sense left to use was touch and she tried to feel the ground under her paws as she ran. The ground was not flat beneath her paws but rather sloped at an angle. They were running along a hill. Echo slowed to a stop as she realized something. Water ran downhill. If they followed the downward slope it should bring them to a river! ”This way!” She panted as she veered off and plunged down the hill, stumbling over herself and praying that there would be water at the bottom.

Samwell

Sam watched her with concern in his wide amber eyes as she coughed, answering that she did not know this land. He let out a whine, keeping close at her side. At this point he didn’t know where they were going, or even if they were running to or away from the danger!

Samwell could soon hardly stand to keep his eyes open, blinking frantically as his tears streamed down his face and the heat was becoming unbearable. He turned to Echo as she stopped, his heart fluttering in panic. ”Echo, why are you stopped? We have to go!” He cried frantically, his voice cracking and ragged from both his fear and the smoke. Echo did not look better off than he did. She was clearly suffering as well. But then she took off down the slope. Sam followed her immediately, finding that he covered ground much quicker going down hill. His head was very low, thorns and brambles ripping at his nose and muzzle as stayed close at the brown she-wolf’s side.

Soon the air grew clearer as they reached lower and lower ground and Sam gulped in the hazy air frantically, and soon he heard running water. ”Echo… “ he gasped to her in shock and relief, but his throat hurt too much for him to continue his thought as he flung himself over the bank and into the river as thunder boomed over the land once again.

Echo

Her mind began to grow fuzzy from the lack of good air as she tried to keep up with gravity as it pulled her exhausted body down the slope. It took all of her concentration to keep her paws under her. If there was no water at the bottom of this ravine then she was out of ideas. Just as her body was reaching it’s limit, the air began to clear and she found she could breathe easier. She gasped in as much air as she could, making her ears ring and her head spin with the sudden increase of oxygen. In her light-headedness, she didn’t hear the sound of water and glanced questioningly at Sam when he suddenly rushed ahead. Visibility was still poor in the hazy air. The ground turned rocky without warning and Echo was moving too quickly to step carefully. Slipping as the ground turned soft and tripping over a large boulder, Echo found herself somersaulting head over heels and plunging face first into the river most ungracefully.

The sudden rush of cold gave her system a shock and her mind cleared instantly as she came back to the surface sputtering and coughing. The river! They had made it! Oh, thank The One that there was water here! The cool liquid felt glorious on Echo’s burnt paws and nose as she lay mostly submerged in the shallows and lapped at the water to cool her parched throat. Her thirst satisfied, she looked around where they had landed as she caught her breath. Thunder rumbled through the sky above them. Glancing over to Sam as he stood a little ways away, also relishing the cool water, Echo smiled at his appearance. His normally fluffy fur was plastered to his sides, black soot streaked down his legs like black ink before washing away in the water and he had brambles and leaves sticking out all directions in the thick fur around his face and neck. “I found the river!” She exclaimed with a giddy laugh of relief. “How are you? Did you get hurt at all? You look like a mess.” Pricking her ears towards her companion, Echo awaited his reply as she felt the first drops of rain from the coming storm splash on her nose.

Samwell

The water that rushed around Sam felt as if it were sent from heaven, engulfing him in refreshing cool bliss. When he came back up for air he immediately looked around for Echo, having not seen her since he noticed the water. He felt a pang of guilt and fear as he realized that he had not even checked if she was still with him once the river ahead became tangible. He had just ran for it headlong.

To his great relief, there she was in the shallows, quenching her thirst. He waded toward her, stopping a little ways away to drink his own fill. By the time he looked up again she was looking at him and speaking. Samwell smiled in joy, laughing himself at her words. He noticed that his legs were shaking. ”You did! You saved our lives!” He cried, his voice higher than usual from the relief he felt. He shook his head at her question. ”No…” and ducked his head a little as she said he looked like a mess, his amber gaze sweeping self-consciously over his thick, tangled fur. He glanced back up at her. Her own smoke-singed fur and sooty legs were apparent, especially for her small size, but the river was already cleansing her from the filth. And Sam did notice that her fur was quite a bit thinner than his, so of course hers would not look quite so messy. ”What about you?” He glanced her over as he asked, but a sudden crack and crash sound made him jump a mile as he looked at the fiery bank to see that up the hill trees were beginning to succumb to the fiery blaze. He backpedaled anxiously toward the deeper middle of the river. ”W-we should go to the opposite bank.” Sam suggested, pointing with his broad muzzle toward the other side. The fire was quickly spreading down the slope and he could see the terrifying orange curtains that twisted and danced up toward the sky. He gulped.

And suddenly Sam jumped as he felt a cold prickle on the base of his tail and by the time he registered it as rain and looked up to the sky, it had opened up and water came falling down on the land.
Summary: With the calm after the war with Blutwald, Echo takes the chance to explore outside the borders. There, she meets Sam and mother nature throws them a surprise or two.
